What are the things that clutter your life?

As I write this, our building is abuzz with people.  It is rummage sale day!  Throughout the past week, the women (and a few men) of our church have been receiving items, displaying them, pricing them, and getting ready for this day.  That has been happening here at LOCC for over 50 years..  The funds raised will help mission opportunities around our community and the world.

I added a few items from my collection of stuff, and realized that having a rummage sale for our stuff is much like our lives can be. Over our years, we collect things, we fill up our lives with stuff that quickly loses meaning for us, and sometimes it is difficult to get around the clutter.  This is true for our homes as well as our minds and hearts.

Just like a rummage sale for our stuff that we don’t need or want in our homes anymore, there are things in our lives that we don’t need or want to carry around anymore.  They may be from a long time ago, or maybe have just happened to us. When we realize that we don’t have to carry around all of the “stuff” of our lives that keep us from being true, authentic children of God, our perspectives can change.

Just like a rummage sale for our un-needed things, it is helpful to understand that we can clear out, rearrange, and re-imagine our lives so that our hearts and minds are less cluttered.  Each and every day we have the opportunity to open our hearts to God, connect to the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to live into our potential as people called to wholeness.

What are the things that clutter your life and prevent you from fully connecting to God and to others in Christ?  Isn’t it time to get rid of of them?
